Waltham Forest College, Essex
Architect: Richard Hopkinson
We were appointed to design the services for the regeneration of the ‘Heart of the College’ for Waltham Forest college in Essex. This is a complete refurbishment of the central hub of the current facility.
The first phase of the College’s improvement programme was completed in January 2012 at a cost of £3.3 million. Richard Hopkinson Architects working in partnership with Platform 5 Architects IIp created plans which included reconfiguring the underutilised main hall into exciting multi-functional study and leisure areas. The refurbishment also involves a new reception and administration department, seminar rooms and performance studio, Café, refectory and kitchens plus a new social space.
The classroom solution includes multi service radiant panels with integrated lighting, removing the requirement for perimeter heating and enabling full use of the class floor area.
Phase two includes a comprehensive rejuvenation of the teaching classrooms, and we have also been appointed to design the services for the new Hair and Beauty department. The overall scheme incorporates innovative lighting schemes and utilises natural ventilation and solar water heating facilities to enhance its green credentials.
Waltham Forest College’s Heart of the College improvement initiative was shortlisted for the prestigious RIBA (Royal Institute of British Architects) London Award 2012.
