We were appointed by IKEA to design a carbon reduced solution for their new store in Ballymun, Dublin. Fingal County Council had set stringent carbon reduction and on-site renewable targets to be met by the new retail developments.
Whilst there were no opportunities for altering the orientation of the building due to planning constraints, we carried out evaluations on all feasible renewables technologies, which resulted in a closed loop ground source heating and cooling system, working alongside a biomass boiler installation for this project. Passive solar control has also been applied to the south façade.
Our environmental performance statement and carbon emission predictions estimated that the renewable solutions can achieve the 60% carbon saving, and 30% on-site renewable targets set by the Local Authority for this project.
