My Apprenticeship story
“I went to school at St George’s Church of England High School in Kent and studied Media, Food Tech, History and Film Studies. My favourite subject was Media, as it involved working on computers. It was only after leaving school that I realised I wanted to work with computers, so I enrolled at North West Kent College, to study a Level 2 Diploma in IT, which I was really pleased to achieve a Merit in.
After completing my Diploma, I was put in touch with Positive Outcomes, who introduce young people to companies that need apprentices. They introduced me to GDM, who were looking for an IT apprentice. I was really interested in applying, as I enjoyed learning about IT at college, but I wanted to see how it would apply in the business world. Positive Outcomes supported me throughout the application process and, following a successful interview, I was offered the position, at the GDM Dartford office.
As part of my NVQ Level 3 IT Apprenticeship I get ‘on the job’ training with GDM and IT assignments specific to my role, as well as English, Maths and IT exams. I also have a learning advisor, who supports me and visits the office monthly.
In my first week, I had a company induction and was introduced to people in the Head Office and GDM’s London office. Over the past year, I’ve worked closely with the IT Associate; some of my daily activities include setting up new pc’s and laptops and user creation, network monitoring and administration, as well as data gathering and reporting. I also administer mobile phones and copiers, and liaise with suppliers when faults arise. There are over 60 colleagues in the business, and as I’m their first point of contact, I get to work on a variety of problems and IT issues, which I find really interesting.
I enjoy working at GDM and learning about how IT supports business and how IT systems are used to connect everyone to the company network and the outside world. I’ve also learnt how important it is to keep everything up and running, for the staff to be able to perform their roles.
I am hoping to develop my knowledge of IT through extra training courses and work my way up to more responsibility within IT at GDM.”
